Matt Pingel grew up in the world famous little town of Bayreuth,Germany. Home of Wagner and classical music. He began BMX riding in 1980 which should soon be his main influence in Photography. By the mid 80`s he inherited a basic camera from his grandpa. Finally he was able to document his beloved sport through the lens of a crappy old Russian camera. Pingel was heavily influenced by the American Skateboard magazines rather than any European publication of any sport. But because of the lack of money and the lack of getting those mags over in Germany he and a bunch of friends started making their own little `zines. His first shots were 360° round photographs. To get the skateboard style photo he taped a video fisheye converter to the fix 50 mm lens, that`s how he managed to get that effect. Becoming a pro BMX Freestyle rider in his teens he was able to travel the world at a pretty young age. Riding competitions and documenting them on paper and celluloid. So along with progressing in riding, his photographical skills developed as well. He soon joined with Bart and Paul de Jong from Holland and brought out an international BMX/Skate `zine called FAT mag, which is THE online newsletter in the BMX world today. He contributes to tons of alternative sports magazines on a regular, but non profit basis in the 80`s. Simply because there was no money in the fun sport industrie back then. By 1992 he became the editor of BMX Freestyle magazine, the first full color BMX magazine in Germany. Again he was basically a one man band, travelling, shooting, writing and riding competitively. While doing that he got into the music side of photography, contributing to magazines such as Rock Hard or Metal Hammer. He shot and interviewed stars like Iggy Pop,Megadeath,Pantera,Faith no More,Sick of it all,Sonic youth…..By the mid 90`s he decided to quit professional BMX riding and fully concentrate on photography. He movede to London for studying the aspects of photography he had not discovered yet at Kingston University. The darkroom, the studio, med and large format. By the end of his studies he won a UK wide competition out of thousands of students with the most impressive Portfolio. He got a bursary to shoot the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament for two weeks, sponsored by Kodak and Nikon. Later on he established himself as the main photographer for Skatermag uk as well as for RIDE magazine. In 1999 he did the book INLINESKATING together with J.Evans which was successfully sold in the UK and the US.
Today Matt Pingel has got a massive portfolio of published work, which because of his ability to adapt to any aspect of photography has a huge variety of photographical styles.
